Spurs ultimately turned to both managers in an attempt to deliver silverware after failing to get over the line with Pochettino.Mourinho’s spell ended back in April 2021, just days before the League Cup final, after being named as Pochettino’s replacement.And despite the clear dissatisfaction amongst Tottenham fans due to the style of football during his tenure, Hugo Lloris believes Spurs made the right choice to bring in the former Chelsea boss.
Speaking to The Times, Lloris explained why he believes Spurs were right to bring in proven winners like Mourinho and Conte.
“We played amazing football under Mauricio and we were so close to reaching that final step, so the club made I think the right decision to appoint managers that had the experience of winning in different countries,” the Frenchman said. “It didn’t work but it doesn’t mean it was the wrong decision.
“I understand it is not the type of football that the club are used to playing and as soon as you get bad results we got more criticism because it’s not the football you want to watch. It doesn’t mean it’s the wrong football, football is very varied.
“For me it was a great experience to be part of the team of José Mourinho and Antonio Conte, I learnt so much, but we didn’t reach what we expected.”Both managers arrived in north London with an incredible CV after delivering success at every club they had managed.But ultimately, Conte and Mourinho were unable to replicate previous success at Tottenham.
Whether or not the latter could have delivered silverware in that Carabao Cup final back in 2021 had he remained in the job is up for debate.Mourinho has labelled the decision to dismiss him days before the final against Manchester City as ‘ridiculous’.Yet, his days at Spurs were numbered and he had lost the support of the dressing room, as well as the fans.That’s largely down to the style of football and Conte encountered similar issues when results didn’t go his way last season.Tottenham fans expect a certain brand of football and both managers were simply unable to deliver that.
