San Francisco 49ers still frustrated about Super Bowl practice conditions that may have contributed to Dre Greenlaw’s injury.
Kyle Shanahan’s crew was given the task of practicing on a neighboring UNLV football field while the San Francisco 49ers were getting ready for their Super Bowl LVIII matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs. This is how Super Bowl teams usually work: the “designated home team,” in this case the Chiefs, are permitted to practice at the home field of the local NFL franchise, the Las Vegas Raiders. The closest local college football fields are designated as the practice locations for the visiting squad.
The 49ers had to go to UNLV because of the “spongy” field, which made it difficult for players to make accurate cuts when they placed their cleats in the ground. The 49ers did, however, have the choice to reseed the field or even ask for the practices to be relocated if they so desired. However, Shanahan claimed at the time that he was “not worried about it at all.”
However, it was back in February, before the 49ers suffered many major injuries during the game and fell 25-22 to the Chiefs. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw stood out the most since he tore his Achilles tendon while rushing onto the field.
He is not by himself. While rejoicing over youngster Ji-Ayir Brown’s interception, defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks also sustained a torn Achilles.
Coach Shanahan obviously feels very differently now about the practice fields the 49ers utilized to get ready for the Super Bowl, having had months to consider what happened. When questioned about his theories regarding the cause of the injuries
Shanahan expressed his frustration with the entire scenario, and it probably doesn’t help that the team lost the Super Bowl. Even though he is furious, it would probably be best to stay out of any disputes about what used to happen. Though there isn’t much that can be done about it right now, it’s obvious Shanahan is still upset about it. Who is to blame for him? Not to be overlooked, though, is the 49ers’ option to switch fields if they so desired; they simply choose not to, for whatever reason.
