Red Sox depth suffers following lefty’s potential elbow injury scare; updates from O’Neill and Jansen…

This preseason, the Boston Red Sox have suffered quite a few injuries. Regretfully, a number of the illnesses have prevented members of the Red Sox’s already overworked pitching staff from playing.

Due to problems with his throwing elbow, Chris Murphy, one of Boston’s backup pitching alternatives vying for a spot on the Opening Day roster, has been removed from action. On Monday, he will have an MRI, and on March 19, manager Alex Cora plans to reveal the results.

For Boston, Murphy has been enjoying a great spring. After pitching 9.1 innings, he has a 3.86 ERA and 11 strikeouts. But Murphy has been giving up four walks, two home runs, and four earned runs, so some hitters have been getting the better of him.

Murphy still has a good chance, if healthy by March 28, of making the Red Sox Opening Day roster, despite the runs he has given up. Along with Brennan Bernardino, Lucas Luetge, and Joely Rodríguez, he is one of the only lefty alternatives on Boston’s roster; Bernardino was added to the squad due to his strong play in the previous season.
