The Boston Red Sox have been looking for ways to improve their starting lineup. But their development has been hampered by their quest for low-cost assistance.
Boston’s inexpensive free-agent option, Lucas Giolito, isn’t starting his tenure as management had hoped. In an attempt to turn Cooper Criswell into a starter, the Red Sox also signed him; given his Grapefruit League results, this might work.
But the rival Rays of the Boston Red Sox had an affordable, veteran pitching alternative that they took advantage of.
After having surgery on his right shoulder, Jake Odorizzi missed all of 2023’s games, but he’s ready to get back on the mound. He received an invitation to major league camp after the Rays signed him to a minor league contract. Although Odorizzi’s contract is set to start at $1.5 million, there are bonuses available if he plays with the major league team for innings 25, 50, 75, 100, and 150.
However, the Boston Red Sox’s rival Rays had an accessible, seasoned pitching option that they used.
Jake Odorizzi missed every game in 2023 due to surgery on his right shoulder, but he’s eager to return to the mound. The Rays signed him to a minor league deal, and as a result, he was invited to major league camp. Odorizzi’s deal is scheduled to begin at $1.5 million, but if he plays for the major league squad for innings 25, 50, 75, 100, and 150, he will be eligible for bonuses.
Like Giolito, Odorizzi wasn’t at his best during his last two seasons. But, as he had been attempting to do with Giolito and as he had previously done with Carlos Rodón and Kevin Gausman, Boston’s new pitching coach, Andrew Bailey, could have performed some magic with the veteran.
There is nothing to lose for the Red Sox. After Giolito’s setback, they may have taken advantage of another inexpensive rebound candidate who might have eaten innings.
Still, everything is not lost. Better, but more costly, candidates are still available for signing. If Jordan Montgomery is totally out of the question, Michael Lorenzen might be a good choice for the Red Sox.
