Will the Boston Red Sox continue to tweak their bullpen ahead of the 2024 campaign? Craig Breslow doesn’t like to say never, but the Boston baseball manager is happy with the position group right now. The Red Sox traded right-handed reliever John Schreiber to the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Kansas City apparently “pushed” Schreiber.
The deal, which brought infielder David Sandlin to Boston, sparked speculation that the Red Sox could trade one of their veterans. “Right now we’re very happy with the structure, the depth and the competition,” Breslow Flats told reporters in Fort Myers after the organization traded Schreiber to the team. “Of course, we take every decision individually, we have to do what is best for the organization. But we really like what we have now.”
Breslow added: “We remain engaged in some conversations that we think will help the organization. Nothing else to announce at this time. Don’t want to go too far.”.
Breslow confirmed that the organization parted ways with Schreiber largely because of the state of the right-wing support staff. Veterans Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin are expected to hold down high leverage situations, while Boston also added Cooper Criswell and Justin Slate to the group this offseason. All four are right-handed.
“We’ve been talking about our right depth in relief for a while,” Breslow told reporters. “It’s something we feel strongly about and believe in. And if there’s an opportunity, there’s a need to build more starting depth. I think that was one example of an opportunity to do that.”.
