Defensive Tackle Sheldon Rankins Declined A $26 Million Contract Offer of The Bengals.

During the first week of free agency, the Cincinnati Bengals made a number of significant splashes. One of them was signing defensive end Sheldon Rankins to a two-year, $26 million contract.

The Bengals receive much-needed support in the interior of the defensive line from Rankins. Since Larry Ogunjobi left the Bengals following the 2021 season, to be honest, the team hasn’t had a strong interior pass rush.

After spending the previous season with the Houston Texans, where he recorded 37 tackles (29 solo) and six sacks, Rankins, 29, is now playing for Cincinnati. Rankins positions himself to test the market once more in two seasons and, if he plays to his potential, possibly a far larger deal, at an average annual worth of $13 million spread over two years.

The Detroit Lions will miss DJ Reader, but a nose tackle is still needed. Although Rankins is more akin to BJ Hill, the Bengals still require an inside run-stuffer, even with the pass rush being improved.

All things considered, Rankins should thrill Bengals supporters much as he fills a hole in the center of the defensive line.

Following a dismal 2023 season in which they finished near the bottom of the league in many categories, the Bengals are still making investments in their defense. Rankins will support Geno Stone, the recently signed safety, in the interior.
