The Islanders of New York are always having trouble. The Islanders revealed on Tuesday, March 26, that veteran defenseman Scott Mayfield, one of the team’s main players, will miss the remainder of the season due to surgery. This comes on top of the Rangers’ recent success, having become the first team this season to secure a spot in the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Before their game against the Florida Panthers on Thursday, March 28, the team sent a message on X (previously known as Twitter) stating that “he is expected to make a full recovery and not have any issues with his summer training regiment.”

The news is disappointing for the Islanders fan base, which has had a lot of highs and lows this season, but it’s not surprising given that Mayfield was placed on long-term injured reserve just before the trade deadline on March 8.

Mayfield was put on Injured Reserve twice in a row, on December 14 and March 5.

At the time, Islanders general manager Lou Lamoriello told reporters, “We’re going to shut him right down until he gets completely healthy.” The Islanders initially projected that Mayfield would need four to six weeks to recuperate, meaning in the worst case, he would be out until the last week of the regular season.

It’s Been a Tough Season for Scott Mayfield

A lower-body injury has plagued Mayfield since the beginning of the season. Surgery appears to have been necessary, despite the team’s hopes that rest would promote healing and progress in time for the season’s final stretch at home.

Following talks between the player, the Islanders’ medical team, and the franchise hierarchy, all sides concluded that surgery was the best course of action moving forward to prevent any more injury, much less in the closing phases of a campaign that the Isles can only hope to lose
