A number of choices taken throughout the protracted NBA regular season will have an ongoing effect. One of such choices was made by New York Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau in early December as the team’s play was flagging.
Quentin Grimes, the starting shooting guard, did not hold back while discussing his responsibilities on the squad. He was playing it cautiously because he knew that if he made a mistake, a fast hook would follow. He was not pleased with the little touches he was getting.
He had been a starter for almost a season because Thibodeau valued his ability to play both ends of the court. Because of his immense popularity, Grimes was excluded from trade negotiations involving Donovan Mitchell in the 2022 NBA offseason.
However, Thibodeau needed to choose. One of the players was not happy, and he needed to find a solution. Another rotational shift was required, coming up on the anniversary of Thibodeau’s significant overhaul of the group.
Donte DiVincenzo was chosen to replace Grimes in the starting lineup. This has been about as successful a move as anyone could have wished for. Prior to sustaining a knee injury, Grimes performed better off the bench.
