It’s safe to say that the Portland Trail Blazers’ season has taken a turn for the worse if you’ve watched them play over the past several weeks. “Fallen off a cliff” could be a better description. They have now lost six straight games, making it ten losses out of the previous twelve.

As a result of these developments and the ensuing 19-52 record, an increasing number of readers are beginning to have doubts about Head Coach Chauncey Billups. While some have particular concerns, the majority are more concerned about the team’s future and his suitability as its leader. Today’s Blazer’s Edge Mailbag is about that.

This is always a difficult topic, especially around this season. I will restate a few of my earlier remarks because these are crucial disclaimers.

Against an overwhelming river of injuries and stronger opponents, the Blazers are swimming upstream. They have been for at least the last two months. Their veterans have made sporadic appearances. Their finest young players have also come and gone. It makes no difference in such case how skilled your swimming instructor is. Even the best swimmer will be outperformed by the surroundings.
