With the signing of a $55 million, six-year contract extension, Bello will take on the proceeding…

Brayan Bello, 24, will go down in the annals of the Boston Red Sox as their Opening Day starter on March 28 after the team announced his selection on Tuesday morning.

At 24 years, 10 months, and 12 days old, Bello would be the youngest Sox Opening Day starter since 1995’s Aaron Sele (24 years, 10 months, and 2 days) opened the season. This information comes from Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe.

After agreeing to a six-year, $55 million contract deal earlier this month, Bello will play the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on March 28. Last year, Bello had an earned run average of 4.24 and finished 12-11. In his two career starts versus the Mariners, he is 2-0 with a 4.09 ERA.

When asked why Bello was selected, manager Alex Cora responded, “Why not?” “I do think he’s in a position in the organization and in his career where he’s appropriate for that particular game.

A few weeks ago, both he and we made a significant commitment to one another. It is interdependent. He demonstrated last year that he belongs here. He fulfilled every request we made of him.

This year, Bello came early to camp with the intention of being the staff ace. It seemed as though his efforts had paid off when Craig Breslow, who is set to take over as head of Boston’s baseball operations department for the upcoming season, broke the news to him.

“I felt happy, super happy to be told that I was going to be the Opening Day starter,” Bello stated. “I just have to keep putting in a lot of effort going forward to help my team win and be the best starter I can be. Yes, that startled me. I was thrilled to hear that Nick Pivetta would be starting for them on Opening Day since I had assumed that was what would happen.”
