Continuing an annual tradition since taking office in 2017, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin gave a “State of the City” address Tuesday in which he doubled down on his call to save Birmingham-Southern College. Woodfin spoke at a meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Birmingham, of which he is a member, and said that maintaining the university is vital to the economy of the city. Birmingham committed $5 million to BSC.

“You have an existing workforce that produces taxes,” he said of BSC. “The future is in its hands and it will produce our future workforce.”He called on Parliament to act in session today and update the language of a law passed last year that allows the state to grant emergency loans to private colleges. State Treasurer Young Boozer rejected Birmingham-Southern College’s request for a $30 million loan. Lawmakers can fix it, Woodfin said.”I hope the legislators can change one word on the treasurer, and that is ‘may’ with ‘shall,'” Woodfin said. “It’s annoying that we are so complicated. Rejection is required when told to give me money. They don’t say that.
