KNOXVILLE — Tennessee gave mentor Josh Heupel a major raise that places him among the most generously compensated mentors in school football after he drove the Workers to their best season in over 20 years.
Heupel will make $9 million every year through the 2028 football season under the agreement expansion declared by the school Tuesday and marked Jan. 19. That is an increment from the $5 million expansion marked last July that pushed his arrangement through 2027.
Athletic chief Danny White said’s the proof is in the pudding with a 18-8 record, including 11-2 last season, covered by a success over Clemson in the Orange Bowl. White said Heupel and his staff have empowered the program and fans with his forceful style of football.
“We simply required an inventive pioneer like Josh Heupel to reignite the flash,” White said of program that managed what he called a concise time of lethargy. “It’s been amusing to drop in on the party, yet as Josh said after our Orange Bowl win, the best is on the way.”
The Vols have taken down seven Top 25 groups since Heupel was employed in January 2021, which positions third broadly among FBS lead trainers in that range. Tennessee went 3-7 of every 2020 preceding Heupel was employed to supplant Jeremy Pruitt.
