A look forward at the new Alabama DC “Now I will have more,” says Kane Wommack.

His defensive coordinator is Kalen DeBoer, the new football coach at Alabama. Kane Wommack, a former head coach of South Alabama, departed the Jaguars to accept the position.Arriving at UA from Washington, where he had previously played for Fresno State and Indiana, DeBoer received the same counsel on his way in from Alabama sports director Greg Byrne as Crimson Tide basketball coach NateOats.Byrne claimed to have informed the coach taking over for the departed Nick Saban, “You need someone who knows what sweet tea and grits are.”With Wommack, the mission is completed. The new defensive coordinator began his coaching career at Tennessee-Martin, Jacksonville State, and Ole Miss after playing at Arkansas and Southern Miss. Before going back to becoming the head coach in 2021, he was the DC and coach of the USA’s linebackers in 2016 and 2017. He is now staying in the state to fill the vacuum left by Kevin Steele’s retirement.”It is really exciting that I will now have more because I have always found a way to do more with less,” Wommack remarked. “However,we must determine the functionality and optimal fit of thosecomponents.”Following his hiring, Wommack talked with AL.com about what supporters of the Crimson Tide may anticipate from him.”I believe that my ability as a defensive coordinator comes fromFor the Jags, Corey Batoon usually called the defensive plays, although Wommack had a big say in the defensive strategy. On Tuesday, Wommack expressed his excitement about taking on that position again with the Tide.I believe my skills as a play caller have improved, but everyone has certain gifts, and that’s just what I’ve always seemed to be good at,” Wommack remarked. I miss calling plays, figuring out how to go after a player on a third down in the third and fourth quarters, or coming up with a play in the backfield that would create a negative play at a critical juncture in the game, and making those kind of adjustments. I can’t wait to accomplish those things once more.DeBoer
