Commissioner of the PGA Tour Jay Monahan believes that Tiger Woods, the 15-time Major winner, would not be amenable to the concept of giving a Players Championship exemption to a TPC Sawgrass event winner who is not otherwise qualified.

Before the 2024 competition, Monahan was asked by the media if a previous winner of the competition could be accommodated in a special category if he had no other way to play. Tiger Woods may soon have to deal with a risk.

Hat granted him a five-year exemption, which expires this year. As a result, he will need to find another method to qualify, which may involve winning a PGA Tour event, winning a Major, or placing among the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings from the preceding season.

Though Woods may stand to gain from a newly established category, Monahan doubts Woods, a Player Director on the PGA Tour’s Policy Board, would readily consent to it. “I believe you all know Tiger well enough to understand that he wants to earn his way into every competition,” the speaker stated. That is his character.

Monahan emphasized that Woods would probably be the biggest obstacle, but he didn’t want to fully rule out the concept despite possible objections from the 82-time PGA Tour champion.
