WASHINGTON — Two people were killed in a crash in Southeast D.C. on Tuesday after a lengthy police chase from Anne Arundel County.
According to the Anne Arundel Police Department, officers spotted a vehicle allegedly used in an armed robbery, and they began chasing the car.
Eventually, they passed into Prince George’s County where they were observed by U.S. Park Police officers who joined the chase.
In a press release Wednesday, DC Police say the suspects were inside a BMW that was speeding when the driver lost control. The car then veered right and mounted the west curb sidewalk before hitting a tree.
DC Fire and EMS originally reported that the crash involved two cars in the area of Southern Avenue and 41st Avenue, Southeast. However, the car reportedly hit the tree with such force that it caused the vehicle to split in half, with the front part rotating until coming to a stop against an iron fence. Two people involved in the chase were pulled from the vehicle and pronounced dead after the crash. One of those people has since been identified as 17-year-old Dashawn Harris of Southeast. The second person killed has been identified as 18-year-old Zagory Leo Hill of District Heights, Maryland. The third person in the car, identified as 19-year-old Demetri Koger, was reportedly ejected from the car during the crash and tried to run but was taken into custody by police. He was then taken to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.
When asked about Anne Arundel’s chase policy, the police chief directed reporters to their website for that information. On Wednesday, July 3, the BMW was identified by the VIN number as being used in an armed robbery.
