The driver and his best friend, who was the front seat passenger, died when their Vauxhall Corsa crashed head on with a car driven by an elderly man, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

Robert Tepper and Jonathan Scott, both 17, were killed, along with Jonathan’s 16-year-old girlfriend, called Lauren, who was in the back seat.

Dozens of tributes have been left at the scene just outside Mexborough, South Yorkshire.

A steady flow of well-wishers visited the scene, travelling out of Mexborough towards Adwick-upon-Dearne, today.

Many were visibly upset and laid bunches of flowers at the foot of a signpost on grass opposite the Crow Tree Lane junction, in memory of the teenagers.

One read: ‘Lauren, Rob and Jon. Gone but never forgotten.

‘God only takes the best. You will be missed by everyone.’

Another said: ‘RIP JONO. Just shows mate how God takes the best ones first.

‘Always loved and remembered. Never forgotten.

‘Love you, Wrighti.’

A police spokesman said the collision happened around 8pm last night when the Corsa was overtaking a silver Fiat Punto on Adwick Road, near the junction with Crow Tree Lane.

A Vauxhall Astra had just overtaken the Fiat successfully and the Corsa then tried overtaking the Fiat.

The spokesman said: ‘Before it could complete the manoeuvre the Corsa collided head-on with a Volkswagen Golf travelling in the opposite direction.’
