Murrells Inlet, SC — A tragic scene unfolded just minutes ago in the quiet farmlands of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, after a massive explosion rocked the rural area, leaving three teenagers dead. Authorities have cordoned off the scene and launched a full investigation into the cause of the blast, which residents say shook homes and rattled nerves for miles around.

According to the Georgetown County Sheriff’s Office, the explosion occurred near a remote property surrounded by thick woods and farmland just off the main inlet. Deputies and emergency personnel were called to the area after multiple 911 calls reported a loud boom followed by thick black smoke rising from the treeline.

When first responders arrived, they discovered three unresponsive teenagers on the scene. Despite efforts by EMTs, all three were pronounced dead. Their identities have since been confirmed by local authorities, but names are being withheld pending full family notification.

Witnesses say the blast was deafening. “It felt like an earthquake,” said local resident Helen Raynor, who lives about a mile from the site. “Windows shook, and animals started panicking. We could see the smoke from our back porch.”

Investigators from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), along with bomb squad units, arrived shortly afterward to assess the cause of the explosion. Early reports suggest the teens may have been handling or experimenting with some type of homemade explosive device, though this remains unconfirmed.

Sheriff’s deputies say they found remnants of metal tubing and chemical containers at the scene, pointing to a possible improvised explosive device (IED). Investigators have not ruled out foul play, but no suspects have been named.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy,” said Georgetown County Sheriff Carter Weaver. “Our thoughts are with the families affected, and we are doing everything we can to understand what happened here today. We’re also working closely with state and federal authorities to determine the origin of the explosive materials.”

The explosion has stunned the community of Murrells Inlet, a small, coastal town better known for its seafood, scenic marshes, and peaceful rural life. “We love the inlet — it’s peaceful, it’s beautiful,” said longtime resident Dan Brooks. “You never expect something like this to happen here.”

Crisis counselors are being made available to students at nearby schools as the community processes the shocking loss. Parents have been urged to talk to their children about the dangers of handling unknown or dangerous materials, as investigators continue to explore how the teens gained access to the explosive substances.

Authorities plan to release more information as the investigation continues. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity they may have seen near the farmlands earlier in the day.

The area remains blocked off, and the sheriff’s office has promised a full public statement once all d

etails are confirmed.
