THREE teenagers who died in a crash yesterday may have been racing other cars, police revealed.

Jonathan Scott and Robert Tepper, both 17, and two girls were overtaking in a silver Vauxhall Corsa when it collided head-on with a VW Golf.

The youths and a 16-year-old back seat passenger, named only as Jonathan’s girlfriend, Lauren, died. Another girl of 16, who has not been named, was fighting for life in hospital last night after the crash, near Mexborough, South Yorkshire.

Two teenagers, 18 and 19, who were in other vehicles on the same stretch of road at the time of the accident, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. They were freed on bail.

The Golf driver, an elderly man, suffered minor injuries. Last night, Sergeant Andy Noble said police were investigating whether there had been a race. He added: “It is a terrible incident.” Yesterday, Robert’s father Steven Tepper, 42, said both his son andclose friend Jonathan “loved anything to do with wheels”.

He said he understood Jonathan had been driving, with Robert in the front seat. Fighting back tears, he added: “Robert was my best friend, I’ve lost my best mate.”

Yesterday flowers were left at the crash scene. One message said: “Lauren, Rob and Jon. Gone but never forgotten. You will be missed by everyone.”

Another card read: “RIP Lauren. You will always be missed. Always in our hearts.”

TWO teenage boys were killed in a Boxing Day smash in Cheshire.

Will Paton and William Sheppard, both thought to be 18, died on the A34 Handforth bypass, near Wilmslow. Two other teenagers in the car were injured.

An 82-year-old man whose body was found in a South Yorkshire river has been named as Jim Harris.

Mr Harris was pronounced dead shortly after he was found in the River Don in Mexborough at around 07:36 BST on Thursday.

Two men, aged 30 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of murder. They have now been released on bail pending further inquiries, South Yorkshire Police said.

Officers appealed for anyone with information or relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to come forward.

Det Ch Insp Tom Woodward said: “We are particularly interested in people who were in and around the Doncaster Road, Mexborough, area between the hours of 06:00 to 08:00 BST on Thursday morning.

“We believe Jim was traveling in this area at the time and was using a walking stick as an aid.”

Mr Harris’ family is being supported by specially trained officers, the force said.
