A teenage boy drowned on Lake Gaston in Northampton County on Sunday afternoon, officials said
The incident was first reported after 5 p.m. when a teenage boy was missing on Lake Gaston in Henrico, Gaston Volunteer Fire Department officials said.
Divers quickly responded to the area and initiated a search near a dock relatively close to shore.
“Public safety scuba divers searched near the point last seen and recovered the body of the missing young man within 10 minutes,” according to a statement from Gaston Fire officials.
The 17-year-old victim was visiting the lake and was about 200 feet out from a pier in a paddle boat with a friend when the boat began to sink, the Lake Gaston Gazette-Observer reported
The friend swam to a nearby dock, but the 17-year-old became “exhausted” and went underwater, Gaston Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ed Porter told the newspaper.
“We ask that you pray for this family during their time of loss,” Gaston Fire officials said.
Northampton County Sheriff’s Department is leading the investigation, fire officials said
