Ethan Laird, Dion Sanderson and Lee Buchanan injury latest as Birmingham City head for Rotherham

Dion Sanderson and Lee Buchanan have returned to training – but Chris Davies isn’t banking on either defender being fit for Birmingham City’s trip to Rotherham United.

Blues head for Yorkshire this weekend looking to continue their unbeaten start to the League One season. Fresh from dismantling top-of-the-table Wrexham on Monday night, Blues face another one of the pre-season promotion favourites at the New York Stadium.

But they will do so without the central defensive pairing that started the season, Captain Krystian Bielik is suspended and Davies doesn’t expect Sanderson to be fit to replace him in the line-up.

Giving an update on Sanderson, Blues manager Davies said: “He has just joined light training so I would be doubtful that he would be available.”

Davies was more positive on Buchanan who is on track to return before the end of September. Left-back Buchanan sustained a calf injury in a pre-season friendly in late July.

“Lee Buchanan is doing well,” added Davies. “He’s a little bit further ahead. He’s had a bit more training time and everything else. He worked hard to get back from his injury in good time and it’s been good to see him back amongst it again.”

Blues will be without Ethan Laird and Luke Harris due to ankle injuries. Harris is still wearing a protective boot but Laird has been given the all-clear to remove his and step up his recovery in the gym.
