The 23-year-old is reportedly in East Yorkshire for a medical today after terms were agreed on a temporary move to the MKM Stadium. The move is a coup for the Tigers with Rushworth being heavily sought after this summer, with interest from the Premier League as well as former loan club Swansea City.

Halifax-born Rushworth spent the 2023-24 season in the Championship with the Swans, so he has plenty of experience in the division. He was one of the club’s key men last year as they struggled to a mid-table finish, claiming nine clean sheets as he played every league game, which has sparked interest from the top-flight. Prior to his spell in South Wales he had two loans lower down the EFL at Lincoln City and Walsall, impressing at both Midlands clubs.

Despite his strong track record, Rushworth is down the pecking order at the AMEX Stadium, and it appears new boss Fabian Hurzeler wants to send him out on loan again. The England under-21 had looked like he could break into the squad this year but finds himself third choice behind Jason Steele and Bart Verbruggen, who has just returned from injury.

It’s been a summer of upheaval at Hull, with many key outgoings, but Rushworth looks like being a rare positive for them from this window. Having sold Ryan Allsop to Birmingham City, the club were in the market and look to have found one in Rushworth who will likely displace Ivor Pandur as first choice.

Tim Walter’s side are in dire need of a man between the sticks too. The German’s football has proven to be leaky at the back and with Rushworth’s record, the club look to have found their man.

Writer’s View

This is a great move for Hull and Brighton, but maybe not Rushworth. He’s potentially at the point where he could break into the Premier League, but the Championship would likely provide him more game time and a bigger role, which may be better in the long run. For Hull, they’ve got a top-quality goalkeeper who could help improve their fortunes, which is much needed at the moment. It could also give Brighton the chance to sell for profit, so everyone is a winner here.
