Hull City have gone into the new season with two new goalkeepers

Hull City head coach Tim Walter says it’s an open fight between goalkeepers Ivor Pandur and Anthony Racioppi for the number one spot.

Pandur has so far kept his place for City’s two Championship games of the season so far, while Racioppi made his debut in the League Cup defeat to Sheffield Wednesday last midweek days after completing a much-publicised move from Swiss club Young Boys.

Despite making a big error for Wednesday’s second and ultimately, winning goal, the big Swiss stopper recovered well and looked assured with both his hands, and feet, slotting into Walter’s all-action style well.

After that display against the Owls, many fans wondered if he might be thrust in at Home Park as Walter’s number one. But the German boss says Pandur earned his chance to keep the shirt, for now, and says competition for places all over the pitch is exactly what he wants.

They could also face added competition with the news that City are looking to bring in a high-profile goalkeeper on loan before next Friday night’s transfer deadline, one that will immediately challenge for the number one jersey.

“No (it wasn’t a tough decision to start Pandur at Plymouth), it wasn’t because he’s (Racioppi) here for five days or for a week, so he had one game and that’s important for us. Ivor played a good pre-season, so he deserved to play,” Walter told Hull Live when asked if he was tempted to start the former Young Boys ace.

“It’s an open fight for the number one, and everybody knows it and that’s good to have because we need it. Like I mentioned before, we need the challenge, so that’s good to have.”
