Promotion talk- off the menu at Hull City as ‘focus’ message sent

The Tigers are aiming for a first win this weekend when they face the Lions on home soil

Regan Slater admits talk of promotion with Hull City is fanciful at this stage of the season with so much more water to pass under the bridge. City kicked off their Championship season with a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Bristol City on the opening weekend and then fought back to earn the same result at Plymouth Argyle on Saturday, coupled with a League Cup exit against Sheffield Wednesday.

Such has been the amount of change at the MKM Stadium in the summer, with former boss Liam Rosenior leaving along with a host of players, it will take time for Tim Walter’s philosophy to click, leading to many pundits and observers being unsure what to make of City going into the new campaign.

Despite their Carabao Cup exit to Sheffield Wednesday last midweek, boss Tim Walter felt there were significant improvements from the opening weekend, and it’s hoped that progression will continue as the weeks go on with the team desperate to find a first win when Millwall visit the MKM Stadium on Saturday

“Every player wants to win promotion,” Slater told SportsBoom.com. “It was great winning League One, that winning feeling would be great again. But I think it’s just important we don’t get carried away and start looking into the future. We don’t want to put too much pressure on ourselves.

“There’s not a team setting up for relegation, every team wants to do the best possible. It was frustrating last year because we set our targets for promotion, and we failed to do that. But in the same respect, it was a great season for the club. We improved on the previous season (the Tigers finished 15th), so hopefully we can replicate something like that again.

“We can’t be talking at this stage of the season about play-off or automatic promotion, we just need to focus on taking three points as many times as we can. You can’t really do too much about the future, you just have to live for the present. It’s important we try and build momentum from the start of the season and see where that takes us.”
