The Crimson Tide star has committed to Ohio State, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.Downs became arguably the biggest player to enter the transfer window since the retirement of legendary Alabama coach Nick Saban.

The true freshman was right off the bat for a Crimson Tide team that had its ups and downs last season.Downs was projected to land at Alabama’s SEC rival Georgia before he committed to Ohio State.

Georgia recently hired Downs defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson as the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator and safeties coach.The 19-year-old safety led Alabama with 107 tackles, more than 50% more than runner-up Deontae Lawson’s 67 tackles. Downs was also second on the team with two interceptions.

Ohio State fans will be happy to know that Downs was very effective during Alabama’s College Football Playoff loss to Michigan earlier this month. Downs led his team with eight tackles and nearly started the game with an interception of Wolverines quarterback JJ McCarthy before it was broken up.
