A 28-year-old catering service labour contractor who went to Jogeshwari police station around 3am Thursday to file a counter complaint against his workers following a fight hours earlier, collapsed at the station and died. Deepak Jadhav was pronounced dead at 4:44 am at Trauma Care Unit, Jogeshwari (East).
While Jadhav’s family alleged he was ill-treated by cops at the station, police refuted the claim. The matter will be transferred to the crime branch for investigation.Sources said Jadhav, a Jogeshwari (east) resident, had gone to police at that hour since his work had ended only then. He had had a fight with his workers who complained about not being paid. His workers who had lodged their complaint against him were also present at the police station then.
The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. at the Beaumont Clean Ammonia site, which is owned by Woodside Energy and managed by OCI.
Deputies were sent to the site in the 6300 block of Twin City Highway in reference to an injured worker who had fallen while working inside a tank, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Captain Crystal Holmes.
The man was transported to a nearby hospital due to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after.
Judge Chesson has ordered an autopsy.
No additional people were injured and all workers have been accounted for.
“This is a very sad day, and I offer my deepest sympathy to our colleague’s family, friends and workmates,” said Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill. “The safety of our workforce is always our top priority, and we are providing full support to OCI and its contracting company.”
O’Neill says that the company is taking steps to understand the circumstances around the incident.
They are working with authorities, regulators, OCI and the contractor company.
“A full investigation will be initiated and a stand down of all work is currently in place,” said O’Neil.
Senior Woodside management is working to provide support to the employees.
