Two North Central Speedway track officials were seriously injured Wednesday night after being struck by a race car that went off the track during a race were in critical condition Thursday at a Twin Cities hospital.
The accident happened about 11 p.m. during the second of three feature races of the RACEMN Mod Series. Coming down a straight-away into Turn 1, two race cars began bumping, sending one cartwheeling over the wall near the pit exit area
Keith Nelson, 48, Brainerd, the Turn No. 1 flag man, and Timothy Boeder, 43, Brainerd, the promoter of North Central Speedway, were standing at the pit exit area and were struck by the race car as it vaulted over the wall and fence. Both were airlifted from the scene by North Ambulance to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where Thursday they were reported in critical condition.
According to his CaringBridge website, Nelson is in North Memorial’s Trauma Neuro Intensive Care Unit. A post on the website said Nelson is expected to live.
“He is currently sedated and will be for five more days. He has many broken bones to his face, including his eye sockets, cheek bones, nose and jaw,” Nelson’s CaringBridge website said.
