Massive fire destroys several buildings in Corolla

A massive fire that started in a commercial building has brought firefighters from across the Outer Banks to Corolla Friday night to battle the blaze

CURRITUCK COUNTY, N.C. (WVEC) — Investigators could not determine the cause of a massive fire that destroyed one building and damaged three others in Corolla June 12.

The fire started in a commercial building and brought firefighters from across the Outer Banks to assist.

According to a spokesperson for Currituck County, the fire started at around 7:15 p.m. in the Brindley Beach Center on Ocean Trail, which is what N.C. Rte. 12 is named in that area.

The fire was then driven by high winds, causing two homes to the north to also catch fire.

No one was inside the building when it caught fire.

Investigators found live electrical wires buried beneath mulch in a flower bed on the left side of the building.

“The electrical wiring buried beneath the mulch bed could not be ruled out as a potential cause of the fire, but no evidence of arson was discovered by investigators during the fire scene examination,” stated SBI Special Agent in Charge Anthony Jernigan.

There were no injuries reported.

Fire stations fighting the fire include the Corolla Volunteer Fire Department, the Lower Currituck Volunteer Fire Department, the Crawford Volunteer Fire Department and the Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department from Dare County.

The building that was destroyed, Brindley Beach Realty, is an estimated $1.5 million loss.
