Beloved Volunteer Found Dead in Great Smoky Mountains National Park*

A tragic loss has shaken the Great Smoky Mountains National Park community, as longtime volunteer Ann Houghton was found deceased after going missing during a hike.

 

Ann, a 20-year veteran volunteer, was reported missing on February 1, prompting a search effort in the Smokemont area. Her body was later discovered off the Enloe Creek Trail.

 

The cause of Ann’s death remains under investigation, but authorities have ruled out foul play. The park has extended its condolences to Ann’s family and friends, remembering her as a “dedicated volunteer and avid hiker.”

 

Ann’s dedication to the park earned her a nomination for the National Park Service George and Helen Hartzog Awards for Outstanding Volunteer Service in 2022. Her legacy will continue to inspire the Smokies Community.
