President of the Massachusetts State Police Association Brian Williams says they are now pushing for higher penalties when it comes to the “Move Over Law.”
The law requires drivers to move over when there is an emergency or maintenance vehicle with its hazards on and violators currently face a $100 fine.
“Obviously, it’s a deterrent, but it hasn’t been a strong enough deterrent. The proposed changes would increase a first offense fine to $250, $500 for a second offense, and $1,000 for a third offense. If a crash resulting in serious bodily injury occurs, that fine would increase to $2,500 and a punishment of up to a year in jail or the House of Corrections,” Williams explained.
