North Carolina Highway Patrol said troopers are investigating a crash in Madison County that killed one person and left another with serious injuries on Tuesday morning.

Troopers said the crash happened along NC 213 at around 7:45 a.m.

According to troopers, an SUV was pulling onto NC 213 from a private drive when they collided with a pickup truck, which then hit another truck.

Troopers stated that the 17-year-old driver of the SUV passed away at the scene following the crash, and a passenger inside the vehicle was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Troopers added that the passenger is currently in stable condition.

Troopers said no other injuries from the collision were reported.

Following the incident, Madison County Schools confirmed that the 17-year-old victim was a student at Madison High School and released a statement on the situation.

This morning a Madison High School student was killed in a tragic automobile accident on Highway 213 in Marshall. Our entire Madison County Schools family is mourning the loss of a bright and promising member of our school community. At this time, we ask that everyone respect the privacy of the family involved. We have additional counselors available at Madison High School to support our students and staff in this time of grief. Our thoughts and prayers are with the student’s family, friends, and educators. On behalf of Madison County Schools, we express our deepest condolences and offer unwavering support to those affected by this heartbreaking tragedy.
