Lake Placid woman dies in rear-end crash

A 62-year-old Lake Placid woman died early Wednesday morning when hit from behind by a semi-trailer.

The Florida Highway Patrol has not released her name or the name of the 41-year-old male trucker from Miami whose rig hit the woman’s vehicle from behind at the stop light, crushing her gray Jeep Cherokee.

FHP reports state that at 1:56 a.m., both vehicles were northbound on U.S. 27, approaching the U.S. 98 intersection. The Jeep stopped for a red traffic light at the intersection.

However, FHP stated, the driver of the semi “failed to sufficiently slow the vehicle.” His right front collided with the rear of the Jeep, leaving a V-shaped gash and buckling the frame, tossing the Jeep onto the northbound shoulder in front of the Circle K gas station

The semi continued northbound, stopping approximately 200 yards from the point of impact.

Highlands County Fire Rescue crews from Engine 19 and Rescue 19 arrived and pronounced the driver dead on the scene.

FHP had the Florida Department of Transportation close the crash scene including right-hand turn lanes on and off U.S. 27 at that point, forcing traffic to reroute through gas station parking lots, while FHP traffic homicide investigators gathered information. The road was reopened around 8:30 a.m.

Currently, the FHP has the crash still under investigation.
