While being based in Rome, Father Hammond has learned much about the hill cities northeast of the Italian capital where the powerful earthquake struck. RELATED: Italy earthquake kills at least 120, reduces towns to rubble One of them being the historic town of Norcia. “One of the first message I received was from friends who are monks there in Norcia,” he told News 2. While they were unhurt, the historic basilica where his friends are custodians was heavily damaged. It is the birthplace of St. Benedict.

Beyond the historic losses and above all else, Father Hammond’s first thoughts turned to prayer Wednesday morning for the earthquake victims, much like Pope Francis who tossed out prepared remarks for a Vatican audience. “I think they just prayed the rosary together,” the Father added. “Its what we do in the face of these kind of tragedies.”
