A Virginia Tech student from Chesterfield County died after an apparent accident on a rope swing Friday at Lake Gaston in North Carolina, authorities said.

Halifax County (N.C.) deputies said Alex Hable, 20, of Midlothian, had been using the rope to swing into the lake near Littleton when he was found dead on a rock around 3 p.m. Friday.

Deputies and agents with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission are still trying to determine how Hable died Lake Gaston straddles the Virginia-North Carolina line about 80 miles southwest of Richmond.
Hable, who lived in Woodlake, was a rising junior at Virginia Tech and played on the school’s lacrosse team. He graduated from Cosby High School in 2012. A friend of the family has initiated a fundraiser for the boy’s mother, Heather Hable, on GofundMe, a popular fundraising website.
