Breaking: Surprise Nottingham Forest departure announced as statement made

Nottingham Forest have made a fine start to the Premier League season under head coach Nuno Espirito Santo

Steven Reid has announced he has left his role as first-team coach at Nottingham Forest. The former Republic of Ireland international has announced his departure on social media.

His departure ends a lengthy association with the club which included securing promotion to the Premier League. Reid wrote on Instagram: “So my time at @officialnffc has come to an end. Would like to wish everybody at the club every success for the future. Some amazing memories shared over 3 seasons that will live with me forever.”

Reid returned to the City Ground ahead of the 2023/24 campaign after departing the previous summer following a two-year spell with the Reds. When he left in 2022, on the back of promotion being secured, he said he wanted to take up a new challenge and planned to offer his services as a specialist coach “helping people improve their mental well-being, confidence, and leadership”.

Reid first joined Forest as part of Chris Hughton’s coaching staff in October 2020. He remained at the City Ground when Hughton was axed in September 2021, taking caretaker charge for one game as the Reds beat Huddersfield Town 2-0.

When Steve Cooper was appointed as Hughton’s replacement, Reid retained his role as coach. He was an integral figure behind the scenes as Forest memorably clinched their place back in the Premier League via the play-offs in 2022.

Cooper was sacked last December but Reid remained Trentside as part of head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s coaching set-up. Rui Pedro Silva and Julio Figueroa took up the roles of assistant coaches when Nuno came in and are still part of the Portuguese’s backroom staff.

Reid’s announcement comes five games into the 2024/25 season. Forest have yet to be beaten in the league and currently sit eighth in the table.

This is strange. Five games into a new season. Think there could be more to this. Hope he’s not done anything to put the club into disrepute.
