ESPN: Jaguars CB Tyson Campbell placed on IR

The Jaguars’ defense takes a hit with the fourth-year CB now out for a minimum of four weeks with a hamstring injury.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be without a key defender for a month or more, as the Jaguars have announced they have placed starting CB Tyson Campbell on the Injured Reserve list.

Campbell was recently injured this past Sunday with 10:21 remaining in the Miami Dolphins matchup. He was called for pass interference while in coverage against Miami wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and later hobbled off the field while grabbing his hamstring. He would not return to the game and was replaced by Cornerback Montaric (Buster) Brown.

Campbell, the fourth-year Cornerback out of the University of Georgia, signed a four-year, $76.5M contract extension with $53.4M guaranteed on July 23rd, locking in his future with the team. After a dominant training camp performance, it seemed that Tyson’s injury-impacted 2023 season was in the rearview mirror. Campbell most recently missed six games due to nagging hamstring and quad injuries in 2023 and never really seemed himself from the timing of the initial Week 6 injury. New defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen raved about Campbell during Jaguars OTAs:

Unfortunately, these soft tissue-type injuries can often linger and impact that athleticism. This injury will now mark the third season out of four where Tyson has been unable to play every game, as he missed two games with a toe injury in 2021, six games last season, and however many games will eventually be missed this season. His sophomore season in 2022 was his best season, ranking as the ninth-best cornerback per Pro Football Focus. This was also the only fully healthy season for Campbell to date.

The positive news is the injury isn’t a season-ending variety and the team expects Campbell back in due time. Nevertheless, tomorrow came early and the team’s Cornerback depth will be tested. There remains a possibility that this injury may crack open the door for the promising rookie cornerback out of FSU, Jarrian Jones on the outside.

Here’s hoping that the play of Montaric, Jones, Deantre Prince, Tre Flowers, and others allows Campbell ample time to fully make his way back with no lingering impacts in 2024. During the next six weeks, the Jaguars will face the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans, and Indianapolis Colts before heading to London for back-to-back matchups against the New England Patriots and the Chicago Bears.

The earliest Campbell could return to the team is the first London matchup in Week 6 versus the Bears. On Monday, however, coach Doug Pederson hesitated to state that Campbell’s recovery period would be complete before the team’s October 13th and October 20th two-week stay in London.
