A real worry: Hull City new boy latest

Hull City boss Tim Walter has said new signing Steven Alzate isn’t fit enough at the moment to start.

Hull City swooped to land the midfielder on a free transfer earlier this week to bolster their midfield ranks. He was a free agent after cutting ties with Brighton and Hove Albion at the end of last season.

Alzate, 26, officially saw his deal at the AMEX Stadium expire in late June and has since been weighing up his options in the game. He put pen-to-paper on a two-and-a-half year deal with the Tigers, with the club holding an option for a further 12 months on top of that.

In this latest update regarding his condition, Walter has said, as per a report by HullLive: “He’s a good footballer, technically, he’s really, really perfect but he’s not fit at the moment. He’s not fit and he needs another few weeks, but you can see in the first sessions that he is a brilliant player and he will bring us a big impact.”

Hull City are back in action following the international break with a home clash against Sheffield United on Friday night.

The Tigers drew their first three games against Bristol City, Plymouth Argyle and Millwall before they were beaten 2-0 away at Leeds United last time out.

Alzate has been brought in to give them more competition and depth in midfield. He will battle it out with the likes of Oscar Zambrano, Gustavo Puerta, Regan Slater and Xavier Simons for a place in the team when his fitness levels improve.

The Colombia international, who has seven caps under his belt, started his career at Leyton Orient.

He went on to play 12 games for the O’s as a youngster before Brighton snapped him up.

The London-born man made 51 appearances for the Seagulls in all competitions and has chipped in with three goals.

Alzate was loaned out to Swindon Town back in 2018 to get some experience under his belt and has since spent the past two campaigns with Standard Liege in Belgium.

He played 49 times for the Belgian Pro League outfit before heading back to his parent club.

What now?

Alzate will be getting back up to speed on the training pitch as he awaits his Hull City debut.

In the meantime, the Tigers will be focused on their upcoming match against Sheffield United before their trip to Stoke City next week. The Blades were relegated from the Premier League last term along with Burnley and Luton Town and Chris Wilder remains in charge.

Walter’s side have brought in 16 new faces and it may take a while for them to all gel together.
