Abu Kamara transfer statement as rivals say Hull City landed ‘terrific talent’
Hull City signed Abu Kamara from Norwich on transfer deadline day

Abu Kamara was in scintillating form last season at Fratton Park and the Blues were desperate to get him back

Portsmouth Sporting director Richard Hughes says it was not financially sensible for his side to pay the sort of money Hull City paid to land Abu Kamara, but he’s certain the Tigers have landed a ‘terrific talent.’

City ended weeks of negotiations by landing Kamara on a three-year deal from Norwich City for an undisclosed fee, which is thought to total £4.5m with a series of add-ons in place. The Tigers had their sights set on Kamara for much of the summer, while Portsmouth also hoped to keep him after a successful loan spell at the club last season that made him a popular figure on the south coast.

Kamara handed a transfer request in to force a move out of Norwich, but it was City and not Pompey who won the battle, with the fellow Championship side soon put off by the transfer fees being discussed. Despite missing out on the player and the money, Hughes has wished City’s summer signing good luck and is sure the club have signed a top player.

Hughes told The News: “We love Abu, we think he’s a terrific talent, he’s a great young man and we wish him the absolute best. He developed incredibly well over the year, but we move forward with the group we’ve got.

“If there was a scenario where it was sustainable and financially sensible to do so, we would have explored it, but we didn’t put in a bid. There are high reported figures which I’m sure everyone can understand as the reasons why we weren’t able to get involved in the fight for Abu.

“We know where we are and one of our strengths is not wasting our time on things we’re not going to be able to effect. The point where they named a valuation that was far in excess of anything we would be able to achieve was when we moved on and pursued other targets. Regardless, we wish Abu all the best, he’s a terrific young man.”

The right-winger excelled at Portsmouth last season and will be hoping to do the same at the MKM Stadium following his move. Kamara travelled with his new team-mates to the game at Leeds last Saturday but was not involved in the matchday squad, with a potential debut now set for a week on Friday when City return to action at home against Sheffield United.

I’m guessing (unless it’s been reported elsewhere) that this is the player Acun said the “whole league would sit up and take notice of”, if what I’ve just seen on some YouTube clips is anything the judge the lad on (yes I know, YouTube can be decieving). It’s like I was watching a Jaden Philogene with a better end product. Very similar to JP in looks and stature for sure…just 21 and on a long deal here, hopefully he’s going to progress and help move the side forward along with others🤞🤞. If this happens and he gets sold on for another vast profit like JP then so be it, but in the meantime I can’t wait to enjoy watching him play for us..UTT
