Breaking: Possible Pittsburgh Steelers WR solution suspended by the NFL

By Nick Farabaugh | nfarabaugh@pennlive.com

Free agent wide receiver Michael Thomas is being suspended for one game by the NFL for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. The likely best wide receiver still on the free agent market, the Pittsburgh Steelers could look at him as a potential solution, but he will miss the first game of the season no matter who he is with at that point.

Thomas had been with the New Orleans Saints since they selected him out of Ohio State. Still, they let him go this offseason after his production steeply declined following a lengthy recovery from a nagging ankle injury. The 31-year-old wide receiver was the 2019 NFL Offensive Player of the Year but suffered an ankle injury that limited him for much of the last two seasons.

Since that injury, Thomas has not had the same explosiveness that he once had. The three-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time All-Pro has over 6500 career receiving yards but only 448 receiving yards in 10 games in 2023. Still, that would be more than every other receiver not named George Pickens on the market.

Thomas’ suspension stems from a November 2023 incident where he was charged with simple battery and criminal mischief after an altercation between Thomas and a contractor. He was escorted away from the situation by the police, and now earns him a one-game suspension to start the NFL season.

Baltimore has two-time NFL Most Valuable Player Jackson and veteran Josh Johnson on its 53-man roster, with Huntley and rookie Devin Leary, a sixth-round pick out of Kentucky, on the practice squad. Huntley was named to the Pro Bowl in 2022 after completing 67 percent of his passes for 658 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions in six games (four starts). He has thrown for 1,957 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in 20 games (nine starts) with the Ravens. He signed with Baltimore in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Utah.
