Wrexham could look to ‘hijack’ West Brom’s move for 13-goal Championship striker after ‘failed bid’

West Brom, Wrexham and Cardiff are all pushing to sign an in-form Championship star

Championship promotion hopefuls West Brom are also huge admirers of Preston North End striker Keane and see him as the ideal attacking target to help them on their promotion pursuit after an impressive campaign which saw him score 13 goals in 38 appearances for the Lancashire side last term.

The 31-year-old has hit double figures in both of his last two Championship seasons and has kicked off this campaign in similar fashion with one goal in two appearances as he enters the final year of his Deepdale contract. The Express and Star understands that West Brom did test Preston’s resolve with a bid earlier in the summer but that was swiftly rejected by the Lillywhites, who are determined not to lose one of their main players in the final days of the window.

Baggies manager Carlos Corberan has since cooled his interest in the Republic of Ireland international, but could still return to the table with an improved bid before Friday’s transfer deadline day.

Fellow Championship side Cardiff City are also believed to be watching Keane’s situation closely. They currently sit bottom of the table and are determined to turn their fortunes around after picking up just one point from their opening three league matches against Sunderland, Burnley and Swansea City.

PHIL PARKINSON is not a fan of English Football League rules on squad size but the Reds’ boss admits having too many players can have a negative effect.

Clubs in League One are limited to a 22-man squad, although that number does not include goalkeepers or players who were under the age of 21 – such as defender Aaron James – at the start of the calendar year.

The transfer window closes at 11pm tomorrow night and the Reds’ boss, who hasn’t ruled out making a new signing before then, currently has more than 22 senior outfield players at The Racecourse

Parkinson will have to submit his squad to the EFL next month and anyone who fails to make the cut will only be able to feature in cup games until clubs are allowed to change their list when the January transfer window opens.

On a cap on the amount of players that can be named in a squad, Parkinson said: “I have said what I have got to say on that.

“But equally, there is also a manageable number at a football club.

“You want enough cover in the squad but you don’t want the training group to be too big every day because that loses the quality of the sessions.”

Parkinson is still hoping players who are unlikely to make the squad and be part of his plans for the first half of the season will go out on loan and gain first-team football elsewhere.

Wrexham have played four league and cup games so far this season but the likes of strike duo Jake Bickerstaff and Billy Waters haven’t featured yet.
