Hull City have been tasked with trying to negotiate a deal with German giants Hamburg for influential defensive midfielder Jonas Meffert.

Meffert, a defensive midfielder, is viewed as one of Hamburg’s key players and was one of Tim Walter’s trusted lieutenants for the duration of the manager’s spell with the Rothosen before leaving earlier this year and eventually taking over at the MKM Stadium.

Last term, the 28-year-old notched up 2,825 minutes of action for Hamburg in Bundesliga.2 across 32 of their 34 league games, missing just two because of suspension having picked up 10 cautions across the season.

Boss Walter is understood to have made Meffert a key target after watching his side develop throughout pre-season, and has decided the powerful midfielder will do the job he wants when it comes to protecting the back four.

Hull Live understands Meffert is keen on the move and the chance to link up once again with his former HSV boss Walter, whilst testing himself in England’s Championship, but Hamburg are determined to keep the experienced former Germany Under-21 international at the club and sources have said they will do everything in their power to resist City’s overtures.

Meffert is out of contract at Volksparkstadion next summer having penned a three-year deal when he arrived from Holstein Kiel, another of Walter’s former clubs, and could yet sign a new deal at the club, should a move to City fail to materialise.

It’s understood City have lodged a bid in the region of 500,000 euros, with Hamburg wanting a figure thought to be in the region of 1m euros to do a deal for a player they value highly and is a key part of their side, and influential to their hopes of finally securing a return to the Bundesliga this term.

The Tigers, who are working on at least three deals with Meffert, plus a winger and striker, have been linked with Stoke City defender Ben Wilmot and Bayer Leverkusen’s Colombian midfielder Gustavo Puerta.
