Hull City- Bid For Former German Youth International

According to Hull Live, Hull City have made a bid for Hamburger SV midfielder Jonas Meffert.

Tigers’ new manager, Tim Walter, is eager for a reunion with Meffert, who is a player who has previously played under Walter at both Holstein Kiel and Hamburg

The 28-year-old defensive midfielder was a key player for Hamburg last season, playing 32 matches, missing only two in the Bundesliga.2, as the German giants missed out on the 3rd Bundesliga play-off place by an agonising five points.

Meffert is thought to be keen on a move to England, with not only an opportunity to link up with his former manager on the table, but also an opportunity to prove himself in the second tier of English football. However, Hamburg want to keep the former German youth international, with sources from the club saying they will do anything in their power to make sure he stays put.

City are understood to have bid €500,000 for the midfielder, however, Hamburg wants at least double that if they are going to let the 28-year-old leave this summer. The second-tier German side are looking for promotion back to the Bundesliga, and believe that Meffert will be an influential figure in order to achieve this.

Meffert signed for the club from Holstein Kiel in July 2021 and signed a three-year deal at the Volksparkstadion. His deal is set to run out next summer, but he could yet sign an extension if a move to England fails to materialise.

There has been heavy turnover at the MKM Stadium this summer. Former manager Liam Rosenior was sacked for failing to qualify for the playoffs last season, and with him, influential players such as Jacob Greaves and Jaden Philogene have moved to Premier League outfits Ipswich Town and Aston Villa. On top of this, Ozan Tufan, Matt Ingram and Ryan Allsop alongside loanees Fabio Carvalho, Tyler Morton and Liam Delap have also all departed the orange and black side of Yorkshire.

These departures have meant that Hull have been busy in terms of incomings in the transfer market, with nine arrivals through the door so far. Former loanee Ryan Giles has returned, and he has so far been joined by Cody Drameh, Marvin Mehlem, Anthony Racioppi, Liam Millar, Finley Burns, Charlie Hughes, Oscar Zambrano and Mason Burstow.

This turnover has been felt so far, with the Tigers drawing twice against Bristol City and Plymouth Argyle in the Championship, and losing in the Carabao Cup first round against Sheffield Wednesday.

The signings of Mehlem, Racioppi, Millar and Zambrano prove City’s power in both the European and International market, with players linking up with Walter from Germany, Switzerland and Ecuador.

This effort to get Meffert to the club may be difficult, with Hamburg hoping to keep the 28-year-old, and with a little under two weeks before the English window slams shut. The German outfit knows that Hull have money to spend, and with time on their side, they will hold out for the highest offer.

The remaining questions for Hull are whether the Tigers will succumb to this pressure or if they will start seeking other potential players elsewhere. As previously mentioned, they haven’t had the best start to life under their new manager, only managing two points from a possible six. Walter feels like he needs more recruits in through the door, but they may be hard to come by, with time not on their side.
