Chris Davies- explains Siriki Dembele absence after Birmingham City’s win at Wycombe

Siriki Dembele was omitted from Birmingham City’s squad for the 3-2 win at Wycombe Wanderers

Siriki Dembele started for Birmingham City against Reading last weekend but he was omitted against Wycombe Wanderers

Chris Davies insists Siriki Dembele’s absence in Birmingham City’s win at Wycombe Wanderers was just a selection choice.

Dembele was left out of Blues’ squad for the trip to Adams Park and didn’t make the trip. Tyler Roberts watched the game from the stands after travelling to Wycombe as the 19th man.

Davies started Dembele in last weekend’s League One opener with Reading before leaving him on the bench at Charlton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday. There is believed to be transfer interest in Dembele but Davies has been consistent in his willingness to work with the 27-year-old.

Speaking about Dembele’s absence, Davies said: “Unfortunately we have this 18-man squad now rather than a 20-man squad so it just means that people need to miss out and it was him on this occasion. There’s no issue there.”

Blues sealed a 3-2 victory over Wycombe thanks to goals from Alfie May, Luke Harris and Willum Willumsson. After one win on the road in the first seven months of 2024, Blues have managed two in a week under Davies.

The manager added: “I thought we were good throughout generally and their goal came against the run of play, a frustrating one again from our point of view from a counter-attack in the first half. Again, what’s pleasing for me is the players didn’t change. They continued to show discipline in what we do and continued to play, that was really important because we can’t change.

“We were good in the second half as well. We obviously had two more goals and could have scored a couple more as well. I’m pleased with the performance and the result.”

Luke Harris reveals unseen Wycombe tactic that failed as Birmingham City take three points

Luke Harris was speaking after scoring in Birmingham City’s 3-2 win over Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park

Birmingham City passed their first test on the road in League One to emerge with three points – and Luke Harris played an important role.

The on-loan Fulham midfielder made his first league start for Blues after completing 90 minutes in the Carabao Cup victory over Charlton in midweek. Harris marked the occasion with Blues’ second goal in their 3-2 win at Adams Park.

“It was brilliant,” Harris reflected. “It was a full away end and you don’t get that at many clubs. I’m happy to get my first goal.”

While the turf at Adams Park looked superb to the untrained eye, Harris revealed that it wasn’t. Blues manager Chris Davies has warned his players to expect difficult surfaces in League One this season and they encountered one on Saturday.
