Arsenal unwilling to pay €35 million to sign Mikel Merino

Arsenal are unwilling to match Real Sociedad’s €35 million valuation of Mikel Merino as the deal could drag on into the latter stages.

According to El Diario Vasco, Arsenal are reluctant to pay Real Sociedad’s €35 million asking price for Mikel Merino. The midfielder is keen on joining the north Londoners and is not interested in signing a new deal with his current club, as the Gunners could anticipate this deal dragging into the final days of the window.

Arsenal reluctant to pay Mikel Merino’s asking price

The Mikel Merino situation is evident at this stage of the window, as the midfielder is sure not to continue with Real Sociedad beyond his current contract. The player will not entertain a new deal at Real Sociedad despite their desperate efforts to offer him one in the last few days.

Real Sociedad were torn about the idea of losing three of their essential stars in a single window. However, Martin Zubimendi’s decision to reject Liverpool and stay put has boosted their hopes. That call, does make it easier for Merino to move out, as there were some concerns that Sociedad could block his move.

Arsenal are confident of landing Merino, as they have advanced in negotiations over the last many weeks. Earlier reports had suggested the Gunners could wrap up the move for about €25 million, but as per the latest on the issue, it appears Sociedad are keen on at least €35 million.

Arsenal are unwilling to match that asking price for Merino, knowing they have the upper hand due to the 28-year-old target’s contractual situation. The player’s side is willing to join the Gunners, as negotiations could continue well into the latter stages of the transfer window.

Arsenal will sign Mikel Merino

Despite all the talk of a slow process behind the scenes, Arsenal is confident that the deal will be completed. The Gunners do not see value in paying €35 million for a 28-year-old player, as they feel the re-sale value does not represent great numbers. However, at €25 million or thereabouts, they will see the money as a solid investment for the short to medium term.

The whole saga could reach the latter stages of the window, with the Gunners in a position of advantage as they can return in January with an even lower offer. For Sociedad, it’s imperative they do not lose the player for free next summer or at a cut-price deal in the winter window, as their talks could further advance towards an agreement in the coming period.
