Crimson Tide adjust to life with in-helmet communication during fall camp

In-helmet communication and tablets will be a few of the new changes coming to college football

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBRC) – Week three of fall camp for the Alabama Crimson Tide football program is off and rolling. The Tide, who were off on Monday, have reached a bit more than the midway point of the preseason, following Tuesday morning’s practice at the Thomas-Drew Practice Fields.

The first scrimmage is in the rearview mirror from the past weekend and there’s a better feel that the team is getting used to the speed of things. One thing that has been a talking point is the in-helmet communication.

One player on both sides of the ball will wear a green sticker to signify that they are the player receiving calls from the sidelines.

Communication cuts off with 15 seconds remaining on the play clock.

Deontae Lawson is that guy for Alabama on defense and is working during camp to be well-prepared come the regular season.

“You got to make sure everyone gets the call cause the offense could go tempo, and you got to be able to communicate to everyone so that everyone is on the same page, so they can execute their job,” Lawson said.

A number of tablets will also be introduced to teams on the sidelines as the Crimson Tide are now just 18 days away from kickoff against Western Kentucky University. Kickoff is scheduled for Aug. 31 at 6 p.m.
