Hull City should make plans for life without Tommy Conway, if the Bristol City striker does not make the switch to the MKM Stadium this summer.

According to James Piercy, the Tigers have been chasing the 22-year-old after selling Jaden Philogene to Premier League side Aston Villa, however, there is competition from other Championship clubs.

Burnley and Middlesbrough are also interested in Conway, who scored 10 goals in the league last season, as Bristol City finished 11th.

Bristol Live have reported that both the Robins and Burnley are in talks over an “ambitious swap deal”, while it has been stated by the Northern Echo that Boro are on the lookout for another striker this summer.

With so many teams vying for his signature, Hull must have a back-up if Conway does not choose to join them in the coming weeks, otherwise, they have wasted time in a transfer battle.

Conway is the real deal

After losing key players in the transfer window, it is no wonder that the Tigers, who are now managed by Tim Walter, want to seal the deal with Bristol City

Conway was crucial to the Robins’ season, and finished as the club’s top goalscorer, in a relatively mediocre campaign.

The young striker came through the academy at Ashton Gate, and has finally started to show his true potential, with his goal-tally reaching into double-figures in the last two years.

He has an eye for a pass, and is a player who is very active in and around the box, creating 22 chances for his teammates.

His performances last season earned him his first cap for Scotland, making his debut against Finland in an Euros warm-up game, before watching on from the bench in Germany as his country fell at the first hurdle.

Nevertheless, at just 22, he has a bright future ahead of him, and will potentially look at the decent moves that both Alex Scott and Bobby Decordova-Reid took when leaving Bristol City as inspiration when choosing his next club.

Duncan McGuire could make the switch to the Championship with Hull City

If Hull are to fail in the capture of Conway, then they can utilise the scouting analysis from Blackburn Rovers, after they somehow did not bring US striker McGuire to Ewood Park in January.

Rovers did not submit all relevant paperwork to the EFL before the 11pm deadline in February, after trying to sign McGuire on a loan, with a view of making the deal permanent this summer.

However, with the Orlando City star still available, Walter should take interest in him.

McGuire has turned down a new contract from the Florida-based team, and is open to a move away. In an interview with the MLS, he said: “I try not to think about contract talks or transfer talks that much until something real is in front of me.

“So I kind of just don’t bother and let my agent take care of it.”

He continued: “I think about how everything happens for a reason. So I guess we’ll see what happens after the Olympics, whether I stay in Orlando, which I’d be happy to. Or if the opportunity to go somewhere else comes up, I’ll look at the opportunity.”

With reports from the print edition of The Mirror (8th August, page 53) that Middlesbrough are closing in on a deal for Conway, Hull should make McGuire their main target. With deadline day closing in they will not want to waste precious time.

The 23-year-old has scored 20 MLS goals across his first two seasons, with seven coming this year, despite playing just 19 games.

He made three appearances at the Olympics with the United States of America, and despite a lack of goals, this experience will be key for the rest of his career, as he gained his first taste of international competition.

With his ability to lead the line by himself, he makes himself a fantastic back-up to Conway if he chooses to move elsewhere, and he gives Hull the potential to cause up-roar in the Blackburn camp if he performs from the off.
