National media deliver intriguing verdict on Santiago Gimenez amid Nottingham Forest links Sun 11 August 2024

Nottingham Forest are being linked with a new striker before the transfer window closes – with Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez firmly in the sights of the club.

The Mexican international is a wanted man and after Tottenham signed Dominic Solanke, the Reds could now have a free run at the talisman.

Gimenez enjoyed a wonderful campaign in the Eredivisie last season, bagging 26 goals and helping Feyenoord claim a place in the Champions League.

Now, his future appears uncertain and Forest will be doing all they can to try and prise him away from his current club.

Yesterday, the 2024/25 Eredivisie campaign got underway and Gimenez made his first outing domestically of the season.

National media delivers verdict on Forest-linked Santiago Gimenenz

Feyenoord were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw with Willem II in their season curtain-raiser yesterday – with Gimenez handed a starting berth.

The 23-year-old got himself an assist with his fluffed effort at a bicycle kick going straight into the path of Antoni Milambo to fire home from the edge of the box.

Feyenoord were forced to settle for a point though following a goalkeeping error that allowed Kyan Vaesen a chance to score.

Following the game, a national media outlet, NU, delivered an intriguing verdict on the performance of Gimenez.

They claimed that the striker had chances to put Feyenoord out of sight – along with fellow Feyenoord star David Hancko – but neither player looked focused.

This could mean a number of things but Forest will hope that he’s already got one eye on where he might be playing his football beyond the transfer window.

Forest must go full steam ahead for Gimenez

As with any striker signing, there would be pros and cons to Forest signing Gimenez during this transfer window.

At 23, and after scoring 26 goals last season, it would be a signing that firmly fits in with Forest’s recruitment strategy for this summer.

Naturally, however, he’s only scored goals in the Eredivisie and that would mean that he’d have to prove himself in the Premier League.

Much like Ibrahim Sangare, there could be a settling-in period for the Mexican and Forest have to be mindful of that.

However, there is a lot to like about Gimenez coming to Forest and the fact he didn’t look focused – according to the media – could tempt the Reds to try harder for the player valued at £40 million.
