Chris Davies- confirms injury blow for Birmingham City following Reading draw

Chris Davies has admitted Birmingham City suffered an injury concern during the 1-1 draw with Reading.
Summer signing Willum Willumsson received treatment early in the second half and was forced off with around 40 minutes to go. Fulham loanee Luke Harris took his place, slotting into the number 10 role behind Alfie May.

“He’d had a knock on his knee and he’d been struggling with it a little last week,” Davies told Birmingham World when asked about Willumsson post-match.

“I think after half time it stiffened up and got a bit worse, he couldn’t carry on. I haven’t heard any update on that, though,” Davies admitted.

Lee Buchanan and Alfie Chang were the only two players sidelined heading into the start of the new campaign, so Birmingham will be hoping Willumsson isn’t added to that list.

Any serious injury would further frustrations as Blues failed to get out of first gear until the very latter stages of Saturday evening’s Sky Bet League One opener.

May netted an 87th-minute penalty to earn a point on Davies’ competitive managerial debut but it wasn’t the all-star performance many would have expected.

It will understandably take time for Birmingham’s mass of new signings to gel and the fitness levels still aren’t at the optimum level Davies desires. But there’s no hiding away from the fact more was expected from such a talented group.

Chris Davies refuses to deny two imminent Birmingham City transfers

Birmingham City manager Chris Davies has hinted at two imminent transfers, both of great importance.

Jordan James is closing in on a move to French Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais, while Blues are finalising the acquisition of Iceland international right-back Alfons Sampsted, Birmingham World understands.

Blues boss Davies was quizzed on the two deals after the 1-1 draw against Reading and he refused to rule out either.

Firstly speaking on James’ expected departure, the manager said: “I can’t give you anything definitive on that but it looks like it’s heading in that direction, yes.”

Then, when asked about Sampsted, Davies said: “I can’t give you anything definitive on that because he obviously belongs to another club, but when we get anything official on that I will update you.”

Although the latter response wasn’t as conclusive as the first, the manner in which Davies said it was telling. The manager was hesitant, and then hinted something official is on the way.

James’ exit will no doubt come as a big blow to Birmingham as the midfielder, who scored eight goals in 42 Championship appearances last season, is one of the most promising players in the EFL.
