‘Experienced’ striker now on Derby County’s ‘radar’ but Paul Warne faces one problem

Derby County are looking to bolster their attacking options after their opening day defeat.

The Rams will be licking their wounds following a 4-2 loss to Blackburn Rovers in the first game of the Championship season, which saw Paul Warne’s side undone in the second half.

Warne has always emphasised the importance of bringing in extra recruits this summer before the transfer window slams shut, in particular in-between the sticks.

Attacking reinforcements have also been at the top of Warne’s wish list, as although major issues resulted from Derby County being cut open way too easily on the counter-attack, there was very little goal scoring ability on show from the Rams, who started Kayden Jackson at striker.

New signing Jerry Yates was absent from the squad, and it could be argued that he could have played a significant part in turning the game around, however it is still very clear that an extra striker must be brought in at Derby County.

As a result, Warne has identified an ex-Premier League striker to sign this summer, however they face a current obstacle in bringing him to Pride Park.

Derby County interested in Cauley Woodrow but face one key issue

Warne has identified ‘experienced’ Luton Town striker Cauley Woodrow to lead the line this season, however no deal for the Hatters’ striker will be sanctioned until the fellow Championship side bring in extra attacking recruits, per Alan Nixon on Patreon.

The Luton Town striker that has ‘come on to Derby’s radar’ found himself playing Premier League football in the 2023/24 season, with him being utilised on 22 occasions from off the bench, managing just one goal in the campaign against Crystal Palace.

Woodrow has previously performed well at Championship level, with him scoring a total of 26 goals for Barnsley across the 2019/20 and 2022/21 seasons.

Has Cauley Woodrow shown enough in recent times to lead the line in the Championship

The 29-year-old striker has undoubtedly proven his goal scoring ability at Championship level in the past, with him having 60 goal contributions at this level throughout his career.

However, his recent spell at Luton Town has seen Woodrow demoted from leading the line like he did whilst at Barnsley and as a result has fallen out of touch with his ability at this level, which has come down to lack of game time and confidence.

Warne will need a guarantee of goals at this level, and there doesn’t seem to be enough concrete evidence to suggest that Woodrow will definitely be able to provide that for Derby County this season.

If Warne’s side are able to get the striker for a cut-price deal, then it could be seen as a shrewd buy from Derby County, and he would likely prove to be a solid back-up, however the Rams may have to think slightly more ambitiously if they are going to find someone who can guarantee a minimum of 10 goals this season.
