Alabama defensive back Zabien Brown hasn’t been at 100% since the start of the Crimson Tide’s fall camp.

So far through five practices, Brown has played with a club on his left hand and despite not missing any sessions the freshman has been limited by the staff during some portions.

Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack explained Brown’s current situation in an injury update following Tuesday’s practice.

“He’s limited. He’s on a bit of a pitch count right now,” Wommack said. “We expect him to be fully back and going in the next couple of days here.”

With Alabama losing three defensive backs, Terrion Arnold (NFL), Kool-Aid McKinstry (NFL) and Trey Amos (transfer portal), Brown is already in contention for playing time at the beginning of his collegiate career.

So far his play has impressed the staff and earned praise from head coach Kalen DeBoer earlier this week.

“He just doesn’t feel like a freshman out there,” DeBoer said. “He does not. We felt that way this spring, and he just followed that up with another big jump, like you would expect. He’s just out there, and I don’t think of him as young or anything like that. He’s just a guy that fits right into the defense.”

Wommack followed up on DeBoer’s praise with some of his own, sharing how impressed he’s been with Brown’s transition from high school to college so far.

“Zabien was so impressive to me coming right off the jump,” Wommack said. “To walk out of high school early as a mid-year enrollee then to be able to play the way he has been playing from the spring time.”
