Marvin-Mehlem-tells Hull City fans what to expect after completing Tigers move

German midfielder Marvin Mehlem says he has the fight needed for the Championship after becoming Hull City’s third signing of what has been a frustrating summer for the Tigers off the field, handing a timely boost to boss Tim Walter.

Mehlem’s move was confirmed on Thursday afternoon after the formalities of his move from SV Darmstadt were completed, and he goes straight into Tim Walter’s squad for Saturday’s final public outing of pre-season at Reading on Saturday having watched his new teammates fight back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Italian giants Fiorentina on Tuesday night.

His arrival is particularly welcome given City’s squad has been decimated since the end of last season with no fewer than 20 squad members leaving the club.

The German is an attacking midfielder by trade and performed well in the Bundesliga for Darmstadt last term and despite their relegation back to the second division, Mehlem was viewed as one of the stand-out performers in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the club.

“I’m very, very happy and very excited to meet all the fans, all the team players and excited to win many games,” the 26-year-old told the club following his switch to England. “I started playing football in my hometown and went to Karlsruher, where I met Tim Walter for the first time when I was 14.

“He taught me how to play football, gave me lots of inspiration and I’m very happy to meet him here in England again. He asked me if I wanted to join the team here in Hull and I didn’t have to think about it. My answer was clear and it was yes.

“The last seven years I was in Darmstadt – lots of ups and downs. It was my first professional station and I liked the time I had there. I learned a lot from Darmstadt and now I’m here for a new adventure. Here (the Championship) is a very high level and I want to learn here more with Tim Walter. In Germany, we say the second league here is like the first in Germany. I’m not the fastest but I’m intelligent – I know how to read the game. I can run a lot. I can fight a lot. This is the perfect league for guys like me.”
